Dr. Scott Ferguson serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the State University of New York at Fredonia, where he has held academic positions since 2009 (Assistant Professor 2009-2015, Associate Professor 2015-present).
His educational background includes a B.S. in Molecular Biology from Westminster College (1994-1998), Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine (1998-2005), and postdoctoral training at Princeton University/HHMI (2005-2009). His research specializes in Drosophila developmental genetics, with core interests spanning RNA biology, translational control mechanisms, cell-cell signaling pathways, embryonic axis specification, and proteomic analysis through genetic screening approaches.
Dr. Ferguson has received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at SUNY Fredonia. His research program includes the 2017 project "Genetic Analysis of Gurken translational Control in Drosophila". He integrates active research into teaching through courses like Genetics (BIOL 237/238), Molecular Genetics Lab (BIOL 437), and specialized capstone offerings, utilizing student response technologies and flipped classroom methodologies while rejecting predetermined laboratory experiments in favor of original research projects.
