Matthew Powner

Matthew Powner is Professor of Organic Chemistry at University College London (UCL) and holds a leadership role as Spoke Leader at the University of Cambridge's Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe (LCLU). His research bridges organic chemistry and origins-of-life studies through the LCLU's interdisciplinary framework.

Research interests: Professor Powner's work focuses on chemical pathways underlying life's emergence, with emphasis on:

• Prebiotic synthesis of biomolecules
• Organic reaction mechanisms in primordial environments
• Chemical evolution toward biological systems
• Astrobiological implications of organic chemistry

Through the LCLU, he collaborates on cross-disciplinary themes including habitable exoplanets, definitions of life, and experimental prebiotic chemistry.
