Matthew Peters is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Macquarie University Hospital and Head of Respiratory Medicine at Concord Hospital. He completed his MD under Prof. Norbert Berend, with research conducted at Concord and Royal North Shore Hospitals. He received the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand Young Investigator Award (1990) and the Allen and Hanbury’s Travelling Fellowship (1990s), leading to work at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London.
His research focuses on respiratory physiology, asthma, lung cancer, and public health initiatives such as tobacco control. He chairs the Global Lung Cancer Coalition and co-founded the Kylie Johnson Lung Cancer Network. His primary role at Macquarie includes leading the Lung Function Laboratory.
Recent work emphasizes asthma biomarkers, post-COVID-19 respiratory rehabilitation, and biologic therapies. He has contributed to over 212 publications and advised more than 30 practicing Thoracic Physicians. Awards include the Lung Foundation Australia Lifetime Achievement Award (2017).
He actively collaborates internationally, contributing to initiatives like the International Severe Asthma Registry (ISAR) and the National E-cigarette Monitoring Consortium. His activities include presentations on COPD treatments and lung volume reduction techniques.
