Matthew Pasek is a Professor in the School of Geosciences at the University of South Florida, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on astrobiology, geochemistry, and cosmochemistry, particularly the role of phosphorus in the origin of life, planetary evolution, and prebiotic chemistry. He holds a Ph.D. in Planetary Science from the University of Arizona (2006) and a B.S. in Geology and Chemistry from the College of William and Mary (2002).
His work explores phosphorus redox cycling, meteorite-derived compounds, and the influence of environmental processes like lightning and meteorite impacts on the emergence of life. He has advised graduate students including Joshua Abbatiello, Jennifer Lago, and Hanlei Zhang. His lab (SCA 513) investigates fulgurite formation, phosphorus mineralogy in extraterrestrial samples, and planetary geochemical cycles.
Recent publications emphasize phosphorus availability on early Earth, Venusian atmospheric chemistry, and the coevolution of life and environments. His studies bridge cosmochemistry with biogeochemical systems, offering insights into planetary habitability and prebiotic pathways.
