Matthew Pace is an Adjunct Professor of History at Cumberland University, affiliated with The Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education and the Arts. His teaching career began at Cumberland University, following prior radio broadcasting work and academic pursuits. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Radio/TV Broadcasting from Volunteer State Community College, a Bachelor’s in Theatre from Middle Tennessee State University, and a Master’s in History from MTSU (2024).
His research focuses on military history with a specialization in the Yugoslav Wars (1991–1999), particularly the role of paramilitary groups like Arkan’s Tigers. His master’s thesis, “Puppets on Invisible Strings: Arkan’s Tigers, the Effect of Paramilitaries and Plausible Deniability in the Yugoslav Wars, 1991 – 1999,” explores geopolitical complexities and institutional deniability in modern conflicts. He also studies Cold War geopolitics, Prussian ascendancy, Napoleonic conflicts, and the historical use of chemical/biological weapons.
Pace has visited Kosovo and plans to research all former Yugoslav republics. His historical influences include William L. Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and professor Gregory Marshall.
