Matthew Martens is Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Missouri (Mizzou), with a faculty background in psychology. He holds a leadership role in academic strategy, accreditation, and faculty affairs, and is actively engaged in research in health and counseling psychology.

His research focuses on health psychology and addictive behaviors, particularly the development and evaluation of brief motivational interventions to reduce at-risk alcohol use and harmful gambling. His work bridges clinical psychology, behavioral health, and public health, with applications in sport psychology settings as well.
Dr. Martens has secured funding from federal and foundation sources and has authored over 125 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. His research emphasizes evidence-based, scalable interventions for substance use prevention.
He has held key administrative roles including Senior Vice Provost and Associate Provost, overseeing faculty recruitment, promotion, tenure, and academic program assessment. He led Mizzou’s academic response during the pandemic and played a central role in the MizzouForward initiative, which recruited over 60 premier scholars.
Dr. Martens has supervised major units such as International Programs, Libraries, and the MU Press, and serves as a liaison to multiple vice chancellors. He is currently leading the university’s preparation for its 2025 Higher Learning Commission accreditation review.
