Matthew Marr is an Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at Florida International University's Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs. As an urban ethnographer, his research examines homelessness through multilevel social contexts in global cities like Miami, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.
He directs two major initiatives: 'Equitable Pathways from Unsheltered to Housing' (funded by the National Alliance to End Homelessness) exploring housing access equity in Miami-Dade County, and the 'US-Japan Service Hub Network' (supported by the Japan Foundation) analyzing neighborhood-based support systems for marginalized populations.
His publications emphasize spatial justice, cross-cultural policy comparisons, and community resilience, with recent work examining pandemic impacts on shelters, spiritual practices in post-homeless integration, and service hub governance. Research consistently engages urban marginality through qualitative methodologies and participatory approaches.
As founding board member of the Miami Coalition to Advance Racial Equity (MCARE), he advocates for racial justice in homelessness, healthcare, and civil rights policy.
