Akram Al-Turk

Akram Al-Turk is an Adjunct Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and a researcher at the Moritz Center for Societal Impact within the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin. His work focuses on housing insecurity, homelessness, and their impacts on health and well-being. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master’s in Global Policy Studies from the LBJ School.

Research Interests: Dr. Al-Turk’s research examines multifaceted causes of housing instability, evaluates homeless service programs, and explores barriers to healthcare access for marginalized communities. He emphasizes health equity and community-based approaches to address systemic inequities.

Professional Experience: Before academia, he served as Senior Director of Research at the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (Travis County), leading publications on Austin’s homelessness crisis. Earlier roles included research at Brookings Institution and program management at the International Budget Partnership.

Labs/Teams: He is affiliated with the Moritz Center for Societal Impact, collaborating with policymakers and service providers to translate research into actionable solutions.
