Matthew M. Young is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Carleton University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from Carleton University and currently serves as Chief Research Officer at Greo Evidence Insights, a global non-profit organization focused on mental health and addiction research. Previously, he spent 12 years at the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA), where he remains a Senior Research Associate.
His career spans over 30 years in mental health, gambling studies, and addiction research. Key contributions include leading the Canadian Substance Use Costs and Harms project as principal investigator, co-chairing the scientific panel for Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health, and pioneering the world’s first lower-risk gambling guidelines. He also led the Canadian Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (CCENDU), issuing critical public health alerts on fentanyl contamination in drug supplies.
Dr. Young’s work emphasizes evidence translation for policy and public health, with extensive advisory roles on international committees monitoring addictive behaviors. His doctoral research focused on craving mechanisms among gambling populations.
