Matthew Ludwig

Matthew Ludwig is a Doctoral Fellow at the George G. Mallinson Institute for Science Education at Western Michigan University. His research focuses on the affective impact of student assessment and evaluation, particularly in foundational geoscience courses. He has developed observation tools to quantify student engagement and is implementing Assessment for Learning (AfL)-style strategies to enhance student achievement through formative feedback.

Ludwig's work emphasizes metacognition and intentional learning, integrating non-evaluative feedback from instructors, peers, and self-assessment. He has collected control group data using surveys, achievement tests, and interviews, and plans to expand into treatment group studies in meteorology education. His goals include refining peer feedback mechanisms and addressing challenges in student self-reflection.

As a participant in the Metacognition Workshop 08, he seeks to improve science methods for elementary educators and contribute to the development of innovative assessment tactics.
