Matthew Lloyd

Matthew Lloyd is a Teaching Associate and PhD Researcher at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Politics and International Relations. His PhD examines the Labour Party’s economic policy through elite interviews, applying historical and discursive institutionalism to explore institutional change in UK capitalism. He holds a BA from the University of Birmingham and an MA from King’s College London. His research focuses on political economy, queer theory, and LGBTQ+ policy modernization, with co-authored work on UK political parties’ LGBTQ+ policy shifts. He has extensive political experience, including roles as a campaign manager for Labour leadership campaigns and National Co-Chair of LGBT+ Labour, influencing Labour’s manifesto. His teaching includes modules on foreign policy, US politics, and political analysis.

Research interests span British politics, queer theory, and political parties’ economic policy-making. He has presented at conferences such as the Political Science Association and UK in a Changing Europe, and his work bridges academia with policy impact through think tanks like Policy Network and Progress. He co-edited the influential LGBT+ National Policy Submission and launched the 'Politics Bubble' podcast to amplify political discourse.

Matthew’s advocacy includes work on LGBTQ+ domestic violence and safeguarding failures in faith communities. His interdisciplinary approach combines elite interviews, comparative analysis, and mixed methods. He has secured funding for research and conferences, including support from Queen Mary’s POLSIS department and COST workshops on LGBTQ+ methodologies.
