Matthew Levi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Crop & Soil Sciences at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), where he has been employed since 2017. His research integrates pedology, ecology, and hydrology, leveraging technologies such as remote sensing, digital soil mapping, and landscape modeling to study spatiotemporal changes in soil and vegetation properties under anthropogenic and global changes. This work aims to improve natural resource planning and sustainable land management.
- Education: Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Arizona.
Research Focus: Levi's work spans soil health, precision irrigation, wildfire prediction, and spatial pedotransfer functions. He collaborates with experts in remote sensing, meteorology, forestry, and geology across the South Central U.S., particularly in the Rio Grande and Red River Basins, to develop predictive models for wildfire risk and watershed hydrology.
Teaching & Outreach: Levi teaches soil pedology, soils and hydrology, and leads the UGA Soil Judging Team (Dirt Dawgs). He actively engages in outreach, including a 2024 YouTube collaboration with Dr. Nick Basinger to discuss cover crops' benefits.
Labs & Teams: As head of UGA's Soil Pedology Lab, Levi bridges fieldwork, lab analysis, and modeling to address interdisciplinary questions. The lab's work informs federal fire prevention strategies and local land-use decisions.
