Matthew L. Meyerson is a Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, serving as Director of the Center for Cancer Genomics and an Institute Member at the Broad Institute. He holds the Charles A. Dana Chair in Human Cancer Genetics. Dr. Meyerson received his MD in 1993 and PhD in 1994 from Harvard University, followed by clinical and research training at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Whitehead Institute.
His research focuses on cancer genomics, lung cancer biology, and genome-inspired drug discovery. Key areas include understanding genomic alterations in lung cancers, exploring the role of the microbiome in cancer (e.g., Fusobacterium in colorectal carcinoma), and developing therapies targeting EGFR/ERBB2 mutations. His lab also contributes to large-scale initiatives like the OPTIMISTICC program to study cancer microbiome impacts.
Award highlights include the National Academy of Medicine membership (2018) and the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research (2009). Dr. Meyerson’s work underpins Dana-Farber’s Profile Program, which analyzes patient cancer genomes to guide treatment strategies.
His leadership roles include directing the Center for Cancer Genomics and collaborating with institutions like the Broad Institute. Current lab projects involve long-read sequencing for structural genomic analysis and translational research on synthetic lethality in TP53 mutant cancers.
