Matthew Koski is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University. His affiliations include the AG Biotech/Biosystems Research Complex (BRC GH203), Jordan Hall (labs 112 and 119), and Long Hall 334 (office). He holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Michigan (2009) and a Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolution from the University of Pittsburgh (2015).
His research focuses on ecological and evolutionary processes shaping floral diversity, particularly floral adaptation to abiotic/biotic conditions. Key areas include floral thermoregulation, pollination ecology, and global change impacts on plant traits. He uses herbarium-based studies and experimental approaches across latitudinal/altitudinal gradients. Recent work explores pollen thermal performance, leaf variegation clines, and population genetic dynamics in edge populations.
Teaching responsibilities include Evolutionary Biology (BIOL3350) and Concepts in Evolution/Ecology (BIOL8000). His lab conducts outreach through the Clemson Flower Color Project, engaging the public in floral diversity research.
Key grants include NSF CAREER funding (2023) for sensory drive research. His work bridges plant physiology, ecology, and evolution, with over 30 peer-reviewed publications since 2015. Current projects investigate how environmental variation shapes floral trait evolution and plant-pollinator mutualisms under global change scenarios.
