Matthew Kolodziej is a tenured Professor of Art in the Painting and Drawing program at the Myers School of Art, University of Akron, where he has taught since 2001. He co-founded the university's Center for Biomimicry research and initiated the Synapse series exploring intersections between art and science.
His educational background includes:
- BA in Economics from the University of Chicago (1988)
- MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (1993)
Kolodziej's research investigates the transitory quality of space and perception through painting and drawing. Using architectural and landscape imagery, he explores change by documenting construction and demolition sites akin to archaeological processes. His work presents surface fragments as evidence of structural intersections, blending contemporary art with scientific observation.
Recent artworks (2022-2023) demonstrate consistent exploration of spatial perception through acrylic media, focusing on architectural transitions and environmental materiality across varying scales and supports.
Scientific awards include:
- Fulbright
- Pollock-Krasner award
No publicly available information exists regarding his advisees or research grants. Kolodziej remains actively engaged through the Biomimicry Research and Innovation Center, collaborating with polymer science, engineering, and biology colleagues while continuing his Synapse initiative for art-science dialogue.
