Matthew J. Taylor serves as Associate Professor of Psychology, Interim Department Chair of Psychological Sciences, and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the University of Missouri-St. Louis' College of Arts and Sciences.
Educational background includes a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from University of Missouri-St. Louis (1997) and a clinical internship at Phoenix Psychology Internship Consortium (PPIC) with rotations at Phoenix Indian Medical Center, Arizona State Hospital, and Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center.
His research focuses on two primary domains: (1) Multicultural psychology examining multiracial identity development, racial socialization processes, and existential-phenomenological therapy adaptations for multiracial individuals; (2) Substance abuse among rural African American and Native American populations investigating self-efficacy, self-esteem, and sports-based protective factors against substance use. He specifically studies how sociohistorical race constructions interact with family socialization messages and racism experiences.
Dr. Taylor is SAFE ZONE TRAINED and accepting new graduate students for Fall 2026. His work addresses domestic violence victimization in minoritized communities and explores sports as resiliency factors for at-risk youth.
