Matthew J. Taylor is a Professor of Geography & the Environment at the University of Denver's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for the Study of (in)Equality. His research focuses on human-environment relationships in Latin America, emphasizing field-based collaboration with international students and communities. Taylor holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Arizona State University (2003), an MS from Louisiana State University (1996), and a BS in Geography & Spanish (1993).
His work integrates climate adaptation, migration, and socioecological systems, with decades of fieldwork in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Mexico. Taylor prioritizes community engagement, addressing issues like land tenure, water governance, and environmental justice. He teaches courses rooted in his research, emphasizing experiential learning and transnational perspectives.
Key research themes include climate vulnerability in dryland agriculture, migration-environment linkages, and tourism's socioecological impacts. His fieldwork spans coastal geomorphology, tree-ring climate reconstructions, and policy analysis of transnational resource conflicts. Taylor's publications span leading journals in geography, environmental science, and interdisciplinary studies.
He collaborates with international institutions to promote sustainable development, particularly in marginalized regions. Current projects examine groundwater management in Nicaragua, high-mountain forest conservation in Guatemala, and the socioenvironmental consequences of migration policies.
