Matthew J. Spaniol is an Assistant Professor in the Department of People and Technology Risk, Uncertainty, and Opportunity (RUNOP) at Roskilde University. He is affiliated with TRANSITIONS – Sustainability Transitions and Environmental Planning Centre and the Centre for Statecraft and International Order. His work focuses on Futures and Foresight Science, leveraging tools like scenario analysis and technology roadmapping to address challenges in maritime industries and blue economies.
He holds a PhD in Scenario Planning from Roskilde University (2017) and a Postdoc in Future of Blue Economies from Aarhus University (2022). As an Associate Editor at Futures and Foresight Science, he bridges academic research with practical foresight applications for private and policy sectors. Key projects include Fehmarn Belt Innovation (2023–2026) and Future Maritime Competencies (2022).
His research explores ethical dimensions of foresight knowledge production, the role of emotion in strategic facilitation, and AI integration in foresight pedagogy. He frequently delivers lectures on topics like AI-assisted scenario planning and cybersecurity policy frameworks.
