Matthew J. Burger is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He holds a Ph.D. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland (2020) and previously served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Misericordia University. His research focuses on the intersections of secularization, pluralism, and political polarization, with additional expertise in identity-based politics, culture wars, and constitutional law.

Research Areas: American political behavior, racial/religious identity politics, democratic institutions, legal activism in civil rights, and the impact of polarization on pluralistic societies. His current work explores polarization linked to religious liberty, reproductive rights, and education.
