Dr. Matthew Herington is an Adjunct Fellow in the School of Communication and Arts at The University of Queensland, affiliated with the Centre for Communication and Social Change. His research focuses on energy access transitions, energy justice, and the application of interdisciplinary frameworks to address socio-technical challenges in developing regions. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from The University of Queensland (2018), exploring positive deviance mechanisms in energy transitions.
His work bridges energy policy, social practices, and non-Western philosophies, emphasizing marginalized communities' perspectives. Key areas include energy poverty dynamics, temporal analyses of policy effectiveness, and participatory approaches to sustainable development. He has contributed to over 15 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and research reports, often collaborating with institutions in India, Papua New Guinea, and Nepal.
Recent publications highlight energy democracy initiatives in Oceania, temporalities in Indian energy policy, and the impacts of coal plant relocations in China. His research consistently advocates for equitable energy access frameworks that integrate cultural and temporal dimensions.
