Matthew Hatvany is a Full Professor at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics, Laval University, Canada. His research focuses on historical and environmental geography, with an emphasis on wetland conservation, coastal geomorphology, and Anthropocene studies across North America, Western Europe, and the South Pacific.

Research Interests span interdisciplinary analyses of human-environment interactions, including:

- Environmental changes in the Anthropocene
- Wetland exploitation and renaturalization
- Coastal geomorphology
His recent publications examine sedimentation dynamics in tidal marshes, waste flow histories, and sustainable rural development. He supervises graduate students in the Department of Geography and collaborates with regional institutions like the Interuniversity Center for Quebec Studies (CIEQ) and the Institute for Environment, Development and Society (IEDS).
Teaching includes courses in Historical Geography, South Pacific Geography, and Environmental History.
