Matthew Goldmark is an Associate Professor of Spanish at Florida State University (FSU), affiliated with the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on Latin American Studies, particularly kinship dynamics and colonial governance in Spanish America. Goldmark’s notable work includes the 2023 book Forms of Relation, which examines non-biological kinship frameworks in colonial contexts. His scholarship has appeared in Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos, Colonial Latin American Review, and GLQ.
Goldmark teaches courses like Non-Fiction and Early Spanish America and Introduction to Hispanic Cultural Analysis. His research integrates literary texts, religious manuals, and colonial correspondence to challenge conventional paradigms of colonial identity formation. An interview with him about Forms of Relation highlights his interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing how colonial actors used textual and bureaucratic ties to assert power.
