Prof. Dr. Matthew Gardner is Professor of Musicology (Early Music) at the University of the Arts Bremen since April 2025, following academic appointments at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (2017-2025), University of Hamburg (summer 2024 substitute professor), Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main (2014-2017 research group leader), and Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (2008-2014 assistant professor and DFG fellow).

His research centers on early music with dual specializations in 18th-century British music (Handel, singers, opera) and early 19th-century Viennese music (Schubert), integrating performance practice, source studies, digital musicology, and critical historiography. He examines cultural transfer, artistic traditions, and societal contexts through opera studies and historically informed performance methodologies.
