Matthew G. Kirschenbaum is Distinguished University Professor of English and Digital Studies at the University of Maryland, with an affiliate appointment in the College of Information Studies. He co-founded and co-directs BookLab and the Plaintxt Press, and is a practicing letterpress printer.
His primary research interests lie in digital humanities, with a focus on digital literary heritage, book history, and digital preservation. He investigates how digital technologies impact the creation, preservation, and study of literary works, blending traditional printing practices with contemporary digital methods.
Professor Kirschenbaum has been honored with the following awards and fellowships:
- National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship
- Guggenheim Fellowship
He has delivered the annual Rosenbach, Breslaur, Brownell, Fales, and McKenzie lectures. His writings have appeared in prominent outlets such as The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
He teaches courses including Building a BookLab (online) and Born-Digital Materials in Special Collections, contributing to the education of students in digital curation and book arts.
