Matthew G. Johnson serves as Associate Professor in Biological Sciences and Director of the E.L. Reed Herbarium at Texas Tech University, joining the institution in Fall 2017 after earning his PhD from Duke University and completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
His research pioneers cost-effective methodologies in plant biodiversity studies through high-throughput DNA sequencing and bioinformatics innovation, specifically targeting enhanced feasibility in phylogenetics and population genetics. Dr. Johnson actively develops laboratory protocols to reduce per-sample costs, enabling previously intractable evolutionary questions to become empirically testable.
As an educator, he implements Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) across all courses and serves as Facilitator for the Biological Collections in Ecology and Evolution Network (BCEENET), supporting dozens of educators in adapting digital natural history collections for diverse classroom settings. His leadership in digitizing over 25,000 herbarium specimens—primarily through undergraduate researchers—and community engagement through Ranch Day, Family STEM Night, and WeDigBio demonstrates integrated commitment to research accessibility and public science education.
