Matthew Frosch, MD, PhD serves as Associate Pathologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Lawrence J. Henderson Associate Professor of Pathology and Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard Medical School. He holds leadership positions as Subspecialty Head of Neuropathology and directs the Neuropathology Core of the Massachusetts Alzheimer Disease Research Center (MADRC).
Dr. Frosch earned his MD from Harvard Medical School, completed residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and finished fellowship training at the same institution. He is board certified in Neuropathology and Anatomic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
His primary research focus centers on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Dr. Frosch's laboratory develops and characterizes animal models of these conditions while coordinating tissue-based activities for the Harvard NeuroDiscovery Center (HNDC). His work spans from basic mechanistic studies to clinical applications in neuropathological diagnostics.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on neurodegenerative mechanisms, diagnostic criteria development, and genetic factors in dementia. His work bridges neuropathological findings with clinical manifestations, particularly in vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia.
Dr. Frosch contributes significantly to academic medicine through his role as author of chapters on the nervous system in Robbins and Cotran's Pathologic Basis of Disease and Robbins Basic Pathology. He also co-authored Non-Neoplastic Diseases of the Central Nervous System in the AFIP/ARP series of fascicles.
As faculty of the C. S. Kubik Laboratory for Neuropathology, he participates in training neuropathology fellows through the ACGME-approved program and contributes to education of neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists. His laboratory occupies 750 square feet in Building 114 at the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, where he oversees the Advanced Tissue Resource Center with laser capture microdissection facilities.
