Matthew Francis is a Professor at Umeå University's Department of Molecular Biology, where he serves as Head of Undergraduate Education. His research laboratory investigates bacterial physiology and pathogenesis, with a particular focus on Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and its mechanisms for preserving biological function in toxic environments. Francis maintains an active research program with international collaborations and has published extensively in high-impact microbiology journals.
- Education: BSc in Microbiology, Genetics and Biochemistry from Adelaide University (1990)
- PhD in Bacterial Pathogenesis from Adelaide University (1997)
- Postdoctoral training at Umeå University (1997-2001)
Professor Francis's research focuses on bacterial stress response mechanisms, particularly the Cpx envelope stress system and its role in regulating virulence factors in pathogenic bacteria. His work examines how bacteria like Yersinia pseudotuberculosis utilize type III secretion systems to interact with host cells, avoid immune responses, and establish infection. His laboratory has identified key regulatory networks that function as molecular switches allowing bacteria to adjust their physiological state according to environmental conditions.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent research trajectory examining bacterial secretion systems, stress responses, and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. His work spans fundamental molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis to applied research on antibiotic resistance dissemination. The Francis laboratory's publications frequently appear in leading microbiology journals including npj Antimicrobials and Resistance, Molecular Microbiology, and Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology.
As Head of Undergraduate Education in the Department of Molecular Biology, Professor Francis has been involved in teaching bacterial infection biology, genetics, and gene expression for many years. His research program has received support from the Swedish Research Council, including a junior investigator starting grant that enabled him to establish his independent research team in 2002.
The Francis Laboratory operates from facilities at 6K and 6L, Hospital Area, 6L-145, Umeå University. The research group maintains a strong interest in understanding bacterial physiology and pathogenesis, with particular emphasis on how pathogens survive host immune responses and environmental stresses. Their work aims to identify critical bacterial survival mechanisms that could serve as targets for novel antimicrobial therapies.
