Dr Matthew Fox is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at University College London, affiliated with the London Geochronology Centre and other international research groups. His research focuses on understanding landscape evolution through the interplay of climate, tectonics, and erosion, using numerical modeling, geochronology, and field data. Key areas include the Antarctic Peninsula, Tibetan Plateau, and Himalayas. He teaches courses in tectonic geomorphology and sedimentology, and has advised fieldwork in glacial environments. His methodologies combine thermochronometry, cosmogenic nuclides, and remote sensing to study surface processes at multiple scales.
Research emphasizes how climate modulates erosion rates and tectonic responses, with recent work exploring CO2 sequestration via silicate weathering. Collaborations include the Berkeley Geochronology Center and ETH Zurich’s Earth Surface Dynamics Group. His field expeditions have included Antarctic fjord studies and the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet. Dr. Fox is a member of the Surface Process Geochemistry Group and actively participates in the LOGIC geochemistry seminar series.
Professional roles include NERC Senior Research Fellow and lecturer at UCL. His affiliations extend to global initiatives like the MOSAiC Arctic research project. He advocates for multi-disciplinary approaches, integrating field observations, lab analyses, and computational models to address Earth system dynamics.
