Dr Matthew F Johnson serves as Associate Professor and Director of Research in the School of Geography at the University of Nottingham, Faculty of Social Sciences. His work integrates hydrological, geomorphological, and ecological processes to advance sustainable freshwater management practices globally.
His academic credentials include:
- BSc Geography, University of Nottingham (2005)
- MSc Environmental Monitoring for Management, Loughborough University (2006)
- PhD, Loughborough University (2011)
Research focuses on organism-river interactions across scales, examining invasive species impacts (notably Signal Crayfish destabilizing riverbeds), climate change effects on thermal regimes, and pollutant dynamics including microplastics and heavy metal bioaccumulation. His work emphasizes sub-lethal ecological impacts and resilience-building in river systems through cross-disciplinary frameworks.
Dr Johnson supervises undergraduate and Masters dissertation projects while collaborating with international partners across the USA, China, Brazil, and UK on applied river management initiatives. His teaching portfolio includes 'Rivers in the Landscape' (GEOG2008), 'Planet Earth' (GEOG1037), and 'Freshwater Management' (GEOG3015), featuring fieldwork and practitioner engagement.
