Matthew DeLisa is the William L. Lewis Professor of Engineering at Cornell University's College of Engineering, with appointments in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and directorship of the Cornell Institute of Biotechnology. His research bridges fundamental biological concepts with novel tools for manipulating biological machinery in living cells, focusing on protein biosynthesis machines in bacteria for therapeutic applications.
Research interests center on engineering cellular processes for drug discovery and production, including:
- Molecular and cellular engineering of protein folding/assembly
- Glycobiology and therapeutic glycoprotein production
- Vaccine biomanufacturing technologies
- Cell-free synthetic biology platforms
- Bacterial engineering for biomedical applications
Publication trends show consistent focus on enzyme engineering, vaccine development, and glycobiology, with recent expansion into machine learning applications for protein design and stabilization.
Awards and honors:
- NSF CAREER Award (2005)
- MIT Technology Review TR35 Top Young Innovator (2005)
- American Chemical Society BIOT Young Investigator (2010)
- AIMBE Fellow (2014)
- Multiple young investigator awards from engineering societies
Research involves collaborations with international institutions including ETH Zürich and Northwestern University, focusing on developing novel vaccine platforms and cancer diagnostic tools.
