Matthew Cushing serves as an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder School of Law, where he directs Executive and Community Learning Programs. He develops custom executive education initiatives for global professionals and administers the Mini Law School program alongside Colorado's Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.

Cushing specializes in appellate practice with deep expertise in constitutional law and litigation. His work bridges theoretical legal frameworks with practical courtroom application, particularly in appellate advocacy and constitutional literacy education. He has argued before the Supreme Court of Ohio, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and contributed to U.S. Supreme Court briefs in landmark cases including Padilla v. Kentucky and Abbott v. Abbott.
As director of the Appellate Advocacy Practicum, he mentors law students in drafting appellate briefs and oral arguments. His Marshall-Brennan project leadership pairs law students with underserved high schools to teach constitutional principles. Prior to academia, he practiced at Jones Day and the Ohio State Solicitor's office, clerked for Ninth Circuit Judge Andrew J. Kleinfeld and District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock, and maintains active involvement in constitutional literacy initiatives through community partnerships.
