Associate Professor Matthew Clarkson serves as the Deputy Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching in the College of Sport, Health and Engineering at Victoria University. He is also the course chair for the Master of Clinical Exercise Science and Rehabilitation (AMEP) program, where he teaches foundational units including SCL6003 Introduction to Clinical Exercise Physiology, SCL6104 Clinical Exercise Practice, and SCL6202 Exercise Assessments and Interventions for Musculoskeletal Conditions. Additionally, he convenes units such as SCL6004 Pain Science, SCL7001 Minor Thesis, SCL7007 Exercise Physiology Practicum 1, and SCL7008 Clinical Exercise Physiology Capstone.
Dr. Clarkson holds a PhD in Clinical Exercise Science from Deakin University (2019), a Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology (2012), a Bachelor of Exercise & Sports Science (Honours) (2014), and a dual Bachelor's degree in Exercise & Sports Science and Commerce (Sport Management) (2010), all from Deakin University. He also completed a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education from Victoria University.
As an accredited exercise physiologist with over 17 years of industry experience, Dr. Clarkson's research focuses on pragmatic exercise solutions for performance and rehabilitation. His primary research areas include blood flow restriction exercise (methodology and clinical applications) and individualizing exercise prescription for patients with clinical conditions, particularly chronic pain and chronic kidney disease. He is an active member of the National Pain Special Interest Group exploring strategies for chronic pain management by exercise professionals and the Global Renal Exercise Network who research and advocate for the engagement of renal patients in physical activity.
Dr. Clarkson's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on blood flow restriction exercise methodologies, applications for chronic conditions, and innovative approaches to managing chronic low back pain through running interventions (the ASTEROID trials). His work spans systematic reviews, clinical trials, and methodological examinations of exercise interventions, with a particular emphasis on translating research findings into practical clinical applications.
Dr. Clarkson has made significant contributions to his field through professional service, including:
- Course accreditation reviewer for Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA)
- Deputy chair/member of ESSA review committees for Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Accredited Exercise Scientist professional standards
- Director for the Council of Heads of Exercise, Sport, and Movement Sciences (CHESMS)
- Member of the ESSA Victorian state chapter committee
With extensive experience supervising research students, Dr. Clarkson has guided 1 PhD student, 9 Masters students, and 2 Honours students through projects focused on blood flow restriction exercise, exercise for chronic pain, and adherence to home-based exercise programs. His collaborative approach extends to building partnerships across healthcare provision and research, with a particular focus on advancing the role of exercise professionals within Australia's allied health workforce.
