Matthew Calhoun is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. A member of the Athabaskan Indian community from the Upper Kuskokwim River region, he grew up in Homer, Alaska. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage (2002), followed by an M.S. (University of Colorado Boulder) and Ph.D. (University of Alaska Fairbanks). His research focuses on cost-effective cold-region solutions, sustainability, and STEM education advocacy.
Teaching responsibilities include Properties of Materials, Fluid Mechanics, and Introduction to Engineering. He serves as the Alfred P. Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnerships (SIGP) Coordinator for ANSEP and advises over 1,500 ANSEP pre-college and university students. His professional service includes advancing STEM accessibility for Indigenous students and promoting construction safety through research.
Publications highlight his work in engineering education and construction safety, emphasizing practical applications in cold regions and safety protocol effectiveness. His career reflects a commitment to bridging academic rigor with community-driven initiatives in Alaska.
