Matthew C. Leone is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Nevada, Reno. He also serves as the Associate Director of the Grant Sawyer Center for Justice Studies. His roles include teaching, research, grant writing, and collaborative projects with faculty and graduate students across departments.
- Education: Ph.D. in Social Ecology (University of California, Irvine), M.A. in Social Ecology (UC Irvine), B.A. in Psychology (San Diego State University)
Research interests focus on corrections systems, juvenile justice, drug-related crime, and white-collar crime. Recent projects investigate crime scene investigators' experiences and Nevada sentencing data trends from 2007–present, analyzing how offender demographics and judge characteristics influence sentencing outcomes.
Through the Grant Sawyer Center, he collaborates with Nevada agencies to analyze criminal justice data, propose policy changes, and address practice improvements. He has co-authored three books and presented extensively at conferences.
Advising and grants involve mentoring graduate students in criminal justice and social psychology, alongside faculty collaborations on funded research projects.
Leone’s work bridges academic research and practical policy, emphasizing evidence-based approaches to criminal justice reform.
