Matthew C Stewart is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine at the University of Illinois. He holds dual appointments as Section Head of Integrated Food Animal Management Systems and as faculty in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. His research focuses on equine musculoskeletal health, tendon biology, veterinary imaging technologies, and clinical outcomes in large animal medicine. Stewart’s work integrates clinical practice with translational research, addressing critical issues like tendon injury mechanisms, predictive modeling of surgical outcomes, and viral oncology in poultry.
Key research interests include tendon repair mechanisms, osteogenic signaling pathways in equine stem cells, and applications of advanced imaging techniques (MRI, SHG microscopy) for diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders. He has pioneered studies on equine deep digital flexor tendinopathy and developed predictive models for post-surgical survival in colic cases. Stewart also contributes to veterinary education innovation, recently expanding clinical exposure programs for students.
His collaborative networks span veterinary science, biomedical engineering, and oncology. While no specific awards are listed, his extensive publication record (60+ articles) and leadership roles highlight his impact in the field. Research outputs emphasize translational solutions for equine and food animal health challenges.
