Matthew Burkett is an Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). He serves as Director of Professional Programs in Systems Engineering and leads the Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP) in Systems Engineering in Northern Virginia. Previously, he held roles as Vice President of Research at LOC Advisers and Senior Director for Data & Analytics at Ankura Consulting Group.
Education: Received BS (2001) and PhD (2019) in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia.
Research focuses on integrating systems engineering principles with financial engineering, economic modeling, and stochastic systems. Key interests include portfolio design, asset management, and applications of Markovian processes in finance. Recent work addresses risk measurement biases and state-based analysis in portfolio management.
Publications span topics from curriculum development in systems engineering education to advanced financial modeling techniques. His work bridges academic theory with practical applications in investment management and consulting.
Awards include the SEAS Teaching Fellowship (2016) and the Louis T. Radar Graduate Service Award (2019). Active in program development, he oversees initiatives that connect industry needs with academic training through innovative master’s programs.
