Matthew Bryan serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Royal Holloway, University of London, leading the Nano-Electronics and Materials Group. His research bridges fundamental magnetism with practical engineering applications in nanoelectronics and biomedical systems.
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in Engineering Materials (Nucleation and propagation of domain walls in Permalloy nanostructures) from University of Sheffield (2005-2008)
- MSci (Hons) Class I in Physics from Durham University (1999-2003)
Bryan's research spans magnetic nanomaterials, domain wall dynamics, and spintronics, with significant contributions to microrobotic systems and elasto-magnetic membranes. His work on artificial cilia and wireless flow control demonstrates interdisciplinary innovation, while his exploration of 2D materials in spintronic devices addresses next-generation computing challenges. Current projects focus on industrial applications through KTP collaborations.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent expertise in trilayer magnetic structures and domain wall manipulation, with increasing emphasis on biomedical applications since 2019. His work shows strong alignment with sustainable technology development through energy-efficient spintronic solutions.
Key recognition includes:
- British Heart Foundation Advanced Training Award Fellowship
Dr. Bryan has secured substantial research funding including an active Innovate UK KTP project with Rubberatkins Limited (2024-2026) as Co-Investigator, previously led the ICURe Innovation-to-Commercialisation Programme (2017), and directed a British Heart Foundation fellowship (2013-2015). His grant portfolio demonstrates strong industry-academia collaboration.
As leader of the Nano-Electronics and Materials Group, he maintains active roles in the magnetism research community including service on the IOP Magnetism Group Committee (2019-2023) and chairing sessions at major international conferences such as MMM-Intermag 2019 and Magnetism 2018.
