Matthew Brettle is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Aberdeen, part of the School of Geosciences. He holds BSc (Hons) and PhD degrees in Geology. His research focuses on stratigraphy, petroleum geology, and sedimentology with a particular interest in sand injectites and subsurface data integration across multiple scales. Brettle’s career includes 18 years in the oil industry (Shell International, Fairfield Energy, etc.) in roles spanning exploration, reservoir modeling, and project management before joining the Sand Injectite Research Group (SIRG) in 2021.
His expertise integrates geological and geophysical data to understand reservoir systems, tectono-sedimentary interactions, and carboniferous sedimentology. Key research projects include analysis of the Millstone Grit Group in the UK Pennines and outcrop characterization of sand injection complexes. He collaborates widely, contributing to studies in the North Sea, Sakhalin Shelf (Russia), and other global basins.
Publications highlight his work on sequence stratigraphy, detrital zircon provenance analysis, and reservoir prediction in complex tectonic settings. Current activities focus on advancing SIRG’s interdisciplinary sand injectite research, combining field observations with modeling techniques.
