Matthew Bonds, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and co-founder/scientific director of PIVOT, a nonprofit strengthening health systems in Madagascar. His dual PhDs in Economics and Disease Ecology from the University of Georgia underpin research focused on poverty ecology, health system transformation, and global disease control. Bonds leads a district-level health system model in Madagascar, integrating novel data systems across community, primary, and secondary care to achieve population-level health impacts. His work has been supported by NIH Fogarty, the James S. McDonnell Foundation, and the Mulago Foundation.
Education: PhDs in Economics and Disease Ecology (University of Georgia). Research emphasizes health systems resilience to climate change, geographic barriers to healthcare access, and interventions to reduce disease spillover risks. Notable projects include evaluating pandemic response strategies during COVID-19 and modeling malaria dynamics in Madagascar. Bonds advocates for evidence-based health system design, blending quantitative methods with on-the-ground implementation.
Key achievements include pioneering the ZERO-G model for disease surveillance and demonstrating how health system strengthening reduces mortality. Awards include NIH K01 and McDonnell Foundation Complex Systems Science Scholar recognition. Current efforts focus on scaling equitable healthcare access in resource-poor settings through interdisciplinary approaches.
