Matthew Bernard

Matthew Bernard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University (MSU) and Director of the MSU Flow Cytometry Core Facility. He holds a PhD in Immunology & Microbiology from the University of Rochester and a BS in Biochemistry from SUNY Geneseo. His research focuses on Immunotoxicology, Immunopharmacology, and flow cytometry applications, particularly in drug safety evaluation and assay development.

Education: PhD in Immunology & Microbiology, University of Rochester (2004–2009); BS in Biochemistry, SUNY Geneseo (2000–2004).

Research interests include immune cell characterization via flow cytometry, immunomodulatory drug effects, and translational studies in inflammation and immunity. He has pioneered flow cytometric assays for immunophenotyping, pharmacodynamic assessments, and viability analysis.

Recent work spans veterinary immunology (e.g., ruminal immune responses in cattle), cancer biomarker discovery (extracellular vesicles), and anticancer drug mechanisms (e.g., proteasome enhancers targeting MYC). His lab supports MSU researchers with cutting-edge flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies.

Funding: Secured a National Institute of Food and Agriculture grant (2022–2026) for agricultural and environmental research via flow cytometry.
