Matthew Bayliss is Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Cincinnati, investigating observational cosmology and galaxy evolution using facilities like Hubble, Chandra, and JWST. His research employs gravitational lensing to study high-redshift galaxies and galaxy clusters. Bayliss holds a PhD from University of Chicago and completed postdoctoral work at Harvard and MIT.
Bayliss leads the Bayliss Research Group, mentoring graduate students and undergraduates in astrophysics research. His team specializes in strong lensing-assisted studies of galaxy formation and develops tools for JWST data analysis. Current projects include SLICE (Strong LensIng and Cluster Evolution) with JWST and studies of Lyman-alpha emission in distant galaxies.
Research has been supported by NASA grants including HST-GO-17311 and JWST-GO-03843, focusing on resolved star formation at cosmic noon. Outreach initiatives include student-led development of JWST analysis tools through Ohio Space Grant funding.
