Matthew Baron is a Professor at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University. His primary research focuses on banking crises, financial fragility, and policy development to mitigate systemic risks. He holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University and a BS in Mathematics from Yale University.
His research explores investor beliefs, bank insolvency dynamics, implicit creditor guarantees, and the long-term impacts of banking crises. He has published in top journals like the Quarterly Journal of Economics and Review of Financial Studies. His work is funded by grants from institutions such as the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) and the Cornell Center for Social Sciences.
Teaching responsibilities include MBA courses in Investment and Portfolio Management and Behavioral Finance, as well as contributions to the Cornell-Tsinghua Finance MBA and PhD programs. He advises PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom secure roles at leading academic institutions and central banks.
Baron is affiliated with the Quantitative Financial History Lab at Cornell, which specializes in historical financial crisis analysis. His current projects include studying credit booms, disaster risk measurement, and the survival dynamics of large banks during crises.
He has served as a visiting researcher at the Federal Reserve Board, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and Commodity Futures Trading Commission, enhancing his engagement with policymaking and regulatory frameworks.
