Matthew Barnson is an Associate Professor of Composition at Stony Brook University. He composes for orchestras, choirs, string quartets, chamber ensembles, dancers, and computers, with recent performances at Carnegie Hall, the Centre Pompidou, and the Kennedy Center, among others.
- Education: Eastman School of Music, University of Pennsylvania, IRCAM, and Yale University, studying under Christopher Rouse, Joseph Schwantner, and Wolfgang Rihm.
His research and creative work spans composition, electronic music, and chamber music, often integrating technology and interdisciplinary collaboration. He has received commissions from prominent institutions such as the Yale School of Music, Third Coast Percussion, and the JACK Quartet.
Scientific and artistic recognition includes awards from the Barlow Endowment, NewMusicUSA, and American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as residencies at international artist colonies. Barnson teaches courses in composition, electronic music, music theory, and the history of music after 1945, and has held teaching positions at Yale College, Third Street Music School Settlement, and Trinity College Dublin.
