Professor Matthew Bailey is a renal physiologist and Personal Chair of Renal Physiology at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the Centre for Cardiovascular Science. His research focuses on physiological and molecular pathways in cardiovascular and renal dysfunction, particularly in hypertension and renal disease.
- BSc (Hons.), PhD
- Trained at UCL, CNRS, and Yale University
Bailey's group specializes in in vivo and ex vivo methodologies to study hypertension and renal dysfunction in mice. His work explores:
- Control of renal haemodynamics and tubular function via intrarenal signaling systems (ATP, endothelin, lactate)
- Mechanisms underlying salt-sensitive hypertension
He has published 75 papers (H-index 28) in journals like JASN, Hypertension, Kidney International, and Circulation, with over £2.5M in research funding and £7.5M for doctoral training. Current grants include support from Kidney Research UK, British Heart Foundation, and Diabetes UK.
- Co-author of major renal textbooks: The Kidney, The Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology, and Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology
- Teaches at renal summer schools across Europe
- Active in public engagement, including a TEDx Talk titled "My Genes Don't Fit! Living in a Salt Saturated Society"
