Matthew Baggetta is an Associate Professor at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs (IUB) and Affiliate Faculty at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. His research focuses on civil society, civic engagement, membership-based organizations, and social movements. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University (2009), an M.A. from Harvard (2005), and a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame (2001).
Research Interests: Baggetta examines how voluntary associations impact members and society, including studies of Sierra Club chapters, community choirs, and urban associations. He co-developed the Observing Civic Engagement Project, using systematic social observation to study civil society activities. His work emphasizes leadership dynamics, organizational effectiveness, and democratic participation.
