Matthew Ayre is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Victoria, specializing in British Arctic whaling trade and Historical Climatology of Baffin Bay. His research reconstructs Arctic climate from historical whaling logbooks and includes fieldwork across the Canadian Arctic. He co-managed the Kluane Lake Research Station and led expeditions that discovered the 1902 wreck of the Nova Zembla whaling vessel.
Research interests focus on Arctic climate reconstruction, historical whaling practices, and marine archaeological discoveries in polar regions. His work combines archival research with experimental field investigations in extreme environments.
Honors include election as Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for significant contributions to Arctic exploration and historical climatology.
