Matthew A. Gubens, MD, MS, is Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he serves as Medical Director of Thoracic Medical Oncology and is a key member of the Division of Hematology/Oncology within the Department of Medicine. He is also Chair of the UCSF Cancer Center Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee, overseeing clinical cancer research at the institution.

His research focuses on advancing precision medicine through biomarker development, immunotherapy optimization, and clinical trial design for thoracic malignancies. He is particularly interested in understanding treatment response and toxicity using genomic and clinical data.
The most recent articles highlight a strong emphasis on immunotherapy (especially immune checkpoint inhibitors), germline and polygenic predictors of toxicity, frailty assessment in older patients, and national guideline development for lung cancer and thymic tumors. His work spans clinical guidelines (NCCN, ASCO, American Radium Society), biomarker-driven trials, and real-world evidence studies.

Dr. Gubens is actively involved in mentoring and collaborative research. His leadership extends to the Association of Northern California Oncologists, where he serves on the Board of Directors. He is involved in multiple clinical trials, including those evaluating sotorasib, lazertinib, amivantamab, and neoadjuvant osimertinib.
He is affiliated with the Thoracic Oncology Program and the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, working in close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to advance patient care and research in thoracic malignancies.
