Matthew A. Malkowski is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin's Jackson School of Geosciences. He holds a BS and MS from Michigan State University and a PhD from Stanford University. His research focuses on siliciclastic depositional systems' responses to climate, tectonics, sea level changes, and human impacts, combining fieldwork, lab analyses, and modeling.
Key research themes include sedimentary system dynamics in modern and ancient environments, detrital zircon provenance studies, and the interplay between tectonics and climate. His work spans regions such as Patagonia, Tibet, the Bering Sea, and the San Francisco Bay. Malkowski leads a research group (www.mmalkowski.com) mentoring students and collaborating on projects funded by NSF and industry partnerships.
Recent studies include the role of sea level rise in estuarine sand transport, detrital isotopic records of tectonic retreat in Patagonia, and sedimentological responses to Early Cretaceous uplift in Tibet. His research also addresses methodological advances in geochronology and geochemical interpretation.
Grants include an NSF collaborative project with Dr. Judith Pardo-Perez on Patagonian Andes basins and a Sandia National Labs grant studying Arctic sedimentology. He actively engages students in fieldwork and lab research, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to geological problems.
