Matteo Valleriani

Prof. Matteo Valleriani holds an Honorary Professorship at Technische Universität Berlin's Department of History of Science (Faculty I: Humanities and Educational Sciences) and serves as Principal Investigator (W2) at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin. He also leads research at the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) and holds a Professorship by Special Appointment at the University of Tel Aviv.

• Research Focus: Transformation of scientific, practical, and technological knowledge across historical periods (Hellenistic, late medieval, early modern), with emphasis on mechanisms of knowledge diffusion and cultural/political entanglements.
• Digital Humanities Integration: Pioneering use of AI, machine learning, and complex systems theory to analyze historical sources and reconstruct scientific networks.
• Key Projects: Leads The Sphere initiative on European scientific identity formation (13th–17th centuries) and investigates visual epistemology in knowledge transmission.

Publications span historical methodologies, cosmological treatises, and AI-driven analysis of early modern astronomical data. His work bridges traditional historiography with computational tools, advocating for open access to digitized sources.
