Matteo Nanni is a Professor at the University of Hamburg since 1 December 2021. Previously, he held academic positions as an assistant professor at the Department of Musicology at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (2004–2010) and at the University of Basel, where he also served as head of its microfilm archive (2011–2015). He completed his habilitation in musicology at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau in 2015 with the thesis The Corporeality of Music: Studies on Musical Knowledge Culture in Padua and the Early Trecento Ballata (1250–1360).
Education
- Master of Arts (1996) in Musicology, Philosophy, and Romance Studies
- Doctorate (2003) in an interdisciplinary program combining Philosophy and Musicology
Research Interests focus on the intersection of musicology, philosophy, and visual culture. His work explores the corporeality of music, the historical evolution of musical notation between the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period, and interdisciplinary approaches to analyzing musical knowledge culture. He has also contributed to digital humanities through projects like the MOOC From Ink to Sound: Decoding Musical Manuscripts.
Projects & Leadership include leading the NCCR Image Criticism Cluster of Excellence "eikones" at the University of Basel (2009–2017), the Thyssen Foundation-funded project on musical notation (2014–2017), and the DFG joint project (2018–present) with institutions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. He has actively engaged in teaching, offering digital consultation hours and managing course signatures for students in bachelor's, master's, and teacher training programs.
